Ladies and gentlemen, the Rolling Stones, of course

What’s your all-time favorite album?

While I think that the best album the Rolling Stones put out was Exile on Main Street, it’s not my favorite album of all time. No, another one of their albums holds that place in my heart 💔. It’s the album that introduced me to my favorite song ever, Winter, and another favorite song, Angie. If you guessed, Goats Head Soup, you’re right .

It’s all because of the song “Winter,a lovely ballad. I’ve always enjoyed the softer side of the Rolling Stones. If you haven’t heard it, give a listen

  1. I LOVE this song!, and I listened several times last night, and again this morning. Thank you for sharing it. The only Rolling Stones songs I’ve heard have always been radio hits, but this is a gem. Admittedly it immediately made me blubbery😄 but that’s what music does for me. Pink once said music helps her get to her emotions, which I found profound and relatable.

“Winter” is lovely just as you said, and it produces clear mental images for me. It’s such a sad and lonely song but I really love imagining the story behind it. At 1:46 there’s a piano riff that triggered a lifelong repeated “rewind” habit, and then the riff leads to an equally moving guitar one. I really didn’t know what to expect, but I never expected to find Mick Jagger as such an endearing vocalist, even his pronunciation of certain words. A few weeks ago I watched their interview on CBS Sunday Morning, and found him very engaging, and really delightful overall.

I just wrote an extensively long reply about my own favorite album and the story behind it, but I will
end this comment with Boston’s Third Stage concept album. I don’t want to hijack your post and make it about me, but it is always the one album I recommend to others. To fully appreciate the 36:27 minutes, I always set aside uninterrupted time. And I’ve listened countless times since December 1987, when it absolutely blew my mind! That hasn’t changed for one moment, even today.

      1. And that it came on the heels of what I felt was an interesting interview – perfect timing. When I’m under a lot of stress or burned out, I have near impossible ability to listen to new music, always reaching for the familiar. Familiar is helpful, but can also become a slippery slope. Sometimes an inadvertent “nudge” really helps.🤓

        1. I want to tell you that I love Boston, but haven’t heard the album you referenced. I’ll be spending part of the day looking for it and hopefully listening to it 😌

          1. I forgot to say how much I’ve always enjoyed Angie! It must have been a radio release. The piano, the meaningful lyrics, the stringed instruments…. It’s so sad but so pretty.. Sometimes I don’t even know how I’ve picked up songs from early childhood through today.

I don’t often listen to entire albums anymore, but I will if it’s a concept album. If you do ever have the chance to listen to it, let me know what you think!

By the way, one of my favorite Boston lyrics since I was a teenager is from More than a Feeling: “I see my Marianne walking away……” The entire song has heart-wrenching lyrics, doesn’t it? And Brad Delp was one of the most incredible vocalists. Absolute perfection.

          2. The Rolling Stones were also good musicians and they wrote good lyrics that were emoted. I didn’t know the album that gave us Amanda 🥰 I listened to the whole album today and I see how well it was put together and the musical thread that was woven through from song to song. It flows. I haven’t heard a whole album for a long time and that is a good one. Thanks for sharing it.

  2. Glad to hear you enjoyed it. It really has been nice to hear some new music, as well as seeing a new side of an old band. Misconceptions abound, and it’s fun to challenge some of mine in a way like this. On that note, I think I will listen to “Winter” as a wind-down, and tomorrow is another day for pushing myself to give an entire album my attention. Deep breaths🤓
