My first name

Write about your first name: its meaning, significance, etymology, etc.

Means daughter of christ. Which is ironic because he made me an atheist. My mother chose it because she thought it was pretty and not for any other reason.

I really wish these prompted longer responses.

  1. Born in Rome, Italy to a couple fully expecting a girl, no thought had been given to naming me as a boy. So, when I squeezed out and displayed my true nature my father simply settled on the first name which came to mind: Marco. This name is as common in Italy as Joe is in the United States. It is the Italian derivative from the Latin Marcus. Of course you remember your Latin declensions; this is from the us, I, o, um. o endings. The meaning supposedly is Defender. Perhaps that’s apt as I’ve spent much of my life defending those who could not defend themselves, such as nonhuman animals and humans who were impaired in some way. But I attribute no magical powers to a name such that it would determine the direction of the bearer’s life. I simply do what I do, and am both strong enough and clever enough to defend myself and those I deeply care about.

  2. My name, Erika, comes from the Old Norse name Eiríkr, which is a combination of the words eir meaning “always” and ríkr meaning “ruler.” However, I am still waiting for my king, er, queendom.

  3. Mine is a reference to a religious character that I find quite problematic. So instead, I lean on one of the values or virtues it stands for. I choose ‘Harmony’.

Also hello, you’ve visited my blog many times and this is my first time here. Apologies for the rudeness in delay.
