Describe your ideal week.
Waking up to find that I could walk, that I have the energy to walk around the block and farther and without anything helping me. No ankle brace, no cane,no handrails, etc.
I would walk to the grocery store. I would walk to the hotel at which I used to work and shock everyone there. And I would get the hubby to drive me out to Mom’s place and take her for a walk around the golf course and then lunch.
My ideal week would end with the realization that I was only getting started.
That’s the thing about ideals, sometimes they’re only fantasy.
I’m saddened by your mention of fantasy. I would rather it be goal. But I respect the thought you have put into this choice and the strength you demonstrate in adjusting to it.
Of course, it’s the long-term goal. The fantasy is waking up one day to it magically happening, especially after being told my paralysis is permanent.
Did I share with you already about Lucille Ball’s early adult paralysis?
No. Please share. Especially if it was neurological.
Oh, yeah ~ completely paralyzed at 22. Doctors said she’d never move again. Took her two years, but she thumbed her nose at them all, and made herself into one of the funniest physical comediennes of all time.
Do you know what caused it?
I don’t ~ but I can tell you that I learned it by reading a display poster at the Universal Studios’ Burbank theme park. You might want to ask them.
Thanks for sharing and for your candor. I daydream about being disability-free, and trying all of the careers I wanted but never could have attained.
I constantly wake up after a particularly vivid dream about walking around the block and think I’m going to just get up and go, then reality quickly rears its ugly face.
I have dreams pretty frequently where I can walk unassisted and think to my dream self “holy shit!” I so relate to this post.
It’s a trick that our brains love to play on us subconsciously, stupid brain damage!
