  1. Didn’t realize Canada had inter provincial trade barriers. Seems weird. That’s like the Cape Province and Gauteng, (where I live) restricting trade between them.
    Most odd!

    1. It’s because of Canada’s size and the fact that each province governs itself. Finally, we have a prime minister who understands the necessity for actual unity.

      1. There is a movement here that wants the Cape Province to secede but I don’t think they have much clout and I haven’t heard or read much in a while.

It has always baffled me why any government would agree to trade with another country when it would compromise the same industry on home soil.
Chinese textile imports virtually wiped put our entire textile industry in the Eastern Cape and most of the factories closed.
Ironically the same government (read political party… ANC) that allowed the importing of massive amounts of cheap Chinese clothes /textiles were the same Johnny – come- lately party that felt obliged to step in and make “law” that all goverment clothes were to be sourced locally. How this was supposed to have been achieved god only knows but at least a small number of local manufacturers managed to survive.
I suspect a number of palms were suitably greased.

We have a chain store here called PeP.
They sell assorted school wear among other things and a few kitchen small kitchen tems. The wife and I were in one shop one Saturday looking for a silicon spatula. I went for a gander through the isles while my wife was chatting with an assistant.
I kid you not, but I found only one one item of clothing that was not “Made in China”. It was a small rack of grey school pants, but even these were not South African, but from neighbouring Swaziland.

Does my head in and I avoid buying anything Chinese when I can and always try to find the locally manufactured equivalent or similar. Easier said than done!

        1. Exactly what I’ve been doing when I can with US goods and investments since 2009,and now the rest of Canada has joined me. It’s just too bad that it takes looming fascism to unite a country this size.
